Nutrition Counselling for Pets

Guidance from an animal nutritionist to help your pet establish healthy eating habits.

Choosing an appropriate diet can set your pet on a path of lifelong healthy eating habits. It can also help prevent many problems, including allergies, nutritional deficiencies, skin and coat disorders, and obesity. Our veterinarians can help you make informed decisions about your pet's diet. We can counsel you on which foods are the best choices based on your pet's needs and your financial considerations. We can demonstrate how much to feed them and how to decode pet food labels. We can create a nutrition plan specifically for your pet, and we're also happy to work with owners to help their overweight pets get down to a healthy weight. Call us to set up a personalized nutrition consultation for your pet.

What foods or substances are toxic for my pet?

In the same way that foods can be good for your pet, some can be poisonous to them. You should always pay close attention to what you feed your pet, as certain human foods/ingredients can cause health problems. Here are some substances and foods toxic to pets:

  • Garlic and onion
  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Candy containing Xylitol
  • Chocolate
  • Grapes
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Human medication
  • Plants (lilies, tulips, azaleas and chrysanthemums)
  • Garden products or pesticides

What should I feed my pet?

Good nutrition varies according to each pet. Factors such as your pet's age, breed and health should be considered when selecting foods for your pet. It is important that your pet has a well-balanced diet that caters to their nutritional needs. Very few commercial puppy foods offer the ideal mix of calcium, energy, and protein levels that certain breeds need. We can provide you with feeding recommendations that will encourage your pet's maximum growth potential without causing developmental problems. For added convenience, we also stock veterinary-approved diets for pets. Ask your veterinarian for their recommendations on what to feed your pet by scheduling an appointment at 780-967-2967.
